CIA

Today in Mr. Schick's class we looked at the CIA fact book. This was a very cool and super informative resource that could help you if you ever had a report on countries. It showed all kinds of information like: people and society, government, history, etc. Of course the CIA cant leak all the information they have on countries but what they can share is very helpful to students and teachers to learn more about a country.

Population and Migration

Today in Human Geography we learned about population and migration. Mr. Schick taught us many different terms we will be using over the course of this chapter. We learned things like: life expectancy, push forces, pull forces, etc. Life expectancies vary in different areas. Life expectancies are the average number of year that a group of people are expected to live. In developing countries life expectancies are lower because they do not have appropriate resources to fulfill their needs. Also, push forces are the qualities that make people not like the country. things like war, pollution, not enough jobs, and prodigious people will make people not want to come to the country. There are also things called pull forces that are qualities that make people want to go to a country. Things like a good economy, good health care, equality, and political freedom will make people want to come to the country.

September 20th

Today we took a test in human geography. The multiple choice was the easy part but he 3 essays hurt my hand. we had around 45 minutes to do the test. We also had a shadow named Dominick who I know from my old school. Also Mr. Schick said my essays were too short and I had to continued like 10 times. Now my hand hurts and my wrist keeps cracking so I don't like the essays. The test was alright.

September 18th

Today in class we went over the PowerPoints we made and the test we will have on Friday. We saw 3 different groups PowerPoints including ours. They were all different in all kinds of ways. For example my group's PowerPoint had pictures spread throughout the power point. the next groups' had all there pictures on one slide. The last group's had some pretty epic slides and transitions. But overall all the PowerPoints were really good.

September 17th

Today we continued our discussion on the Nike factories. We looked at two articles about recent things they have done to improve the workers treatment. The first article we looked at was posted in 2005. It said that Nike had improved and was still doing so. on the other hand the other article was posted in 2012. This article said that Nike had the army force workers into signing a petition that said they didn't have to pay the new wage law which stated minimum wage was $4.00 and Nike only wanted to pay $3.70. Over all I don't think Nike has or ever will change their ways

"Behind the Swoosh"

Today we watched a video of a how a Nike Factory in Indonesia treats their workers. Honestly it was probably the saddest thing I've ever seen. these workers make $1.25 a day and work for about 15 hours. In the video they showed how the workers didn't want Leslie and Jim to take it to far because they need the job. they don't completely know how bad they have it. So Leslie and Jim went to Indonesia for a month and lived off of their wages. They could only afford two meals a day after paying for the necessities. Leslie got very sick during the time in Indonesia and with their wages you could either get Aspin and a bottle of tea or eat. That is how terrible it was in Indonesia. When Leslie and Jim went to Oregon to talk to the CEO about the sweatshops in Indonesia he would not answer anything. this just shows how greedy some Multi-Billionaires can be.

September 13th,2013

Today in class we talked more on globalization. Mr. Schick really likes Wikipedia and encourages us to use it. He told us how to find the topic we are trying to find and how to get to a point on the site. We also started to work on a project on globalization. None of us really got that far but we used Google power points so we can work on it together even if we are not together.

September 11, 2013

Today in class we continued our class discussion on globalization. Mr. Schick told us how thing were globalized thousands of years ago. Globalization would be by word of mouth or trading goods. Greece had olive products, China had silk products, and Egypt had eye makeup. We also talked about North Korea. I think that there situation is very sad the they don't even know how bad they have it. No internet and all Newspapers, Articles, and T.V. shows are controlled by the government. They don't know about the outside world or what it is like to be free. Especially on a day like today I am proud to be an American.

Globalization

In human geography today we talked about globalization. McDonalds was the example of the discussion. We talked about how McDonalds has gone into different countries and changed culture. In Japan everyone used to be super healthy and have sit down meals. They had customs with how the table was set and even pouring the tea. When McDonalds expanded to Tokyo it changed everything. Instead of sit down meals with your family, they started to go through a drive thru or eat at a booth. They started eating unhealthy foods that were taking a toll on their once healthy bodies. American chain restaurants just like McDonalds has globalized all countries over the world.

Google Documents

In Mr. Schick's class today we learned all about Google Documents. It was a really cool way to write papers and share work with the classmates in your group. We were able to all work at the same time and contribute to the assignment together. you could see what everyone had to say without talking over each other and shouting to get you idea out. This is a really organized and useful tool for high school projects or even business documents. Also today was a boy in my class' birthday. Mr. Schick gave him a colorful glitter hat that he had to wear the entire class period. We sang him happy birthday even though Mr. Schick said we sound like dying whales. But what does he expect from a class that was first thing in the morning. But all around I was a very informative class.

Did You Know?

Did you know if Facebook was a country it would be the third largest country in the world?

This fact shows how large social media has become and how much time we spend on the internet. In today's world everyone carries their phones in their pockets wherever they go. Almost everyone has a smart phone or internet on their phone. This fact doesn't surprise me, Facebook is a worldwide phenomenon.

Did you know the number of text messages sent daily is larger then the population?

This fact doesn't shock me because if every person sent just one text message to every person they knew that would be the whole population. But there are people who don't have phones. People have long conversations over text messages. I send about 100 text a day or more.

Did you know that about every 4 minutes 60 babies will be born in the U.S., 244 babies in China, and 351 babies in India?

This fact is so interesting to me! its hard to put all of that into perspective but that is a lot of babies. It makes you realize just how big the world is.

The Mystery of the Married Horse

In todays human geography class we were supposed to learn about Socrates, but things took a unexpected twist. Mr. Schick wanted us to debate on a controversial topic which was same sex marriage. Somehow I had brought up the topic that it was legal for a man and a horse to get married in the state of Texas. So instead of debating on same sex marriage we all tried to prove the legend 'Of the Married Horse" correct or incorrect. We searched for articles that we liable. Apparently "mopopo90" or "gizzardboy" aren't liable sources. I also found out that you need a permit in Texas to walk around barefoot. Socrates would not be too pleased with that law and would probably never visit Texas. Today's human geography class was probably the most fun I have ever had with a teacher.

Democracy

Today in Mr. Schick's class we learned about democracy and Ancient Greece. In Ancient Greece the people wouldn't think of themselves as Greek if they were from Athens that's what the said their nationality was. In 508 B.C. Athens was the first government in history to overthrow their leader and create a democracy. The Athens people would go to the agora, a meeting place, and would vote on things. No more than 6,000 people could vote at a time. All questions that were voted on were yes or no answers. They would use methods such as: saying "I", Raising your hand, or placing different colored pebbles into vases to cast their votes. About 2,000 years later the new founded country "America" uses the same idea of the democracy but because of large populations the people vote for representatives to vote for their state. The idea of democracy has shaped the world's governments and has helped the nations become more efficient.
